The author’s opinion and supporting paragraphs:

Author's opinion: The author believes that students should not be allowed to bring mobile phones to school during lessons. Phones are an unnecessary distraction and a potential cause of crime. They can be used before and after classes.

Paragraphs showing the opinion:

Review 2 — direct display of thoughts (I believe...).

The BASICS of 5 — introduction to the course and prevention of drug addiction (it seems to me that they are an unnecessary distraction... and should only be used before and after school).

Thematic proposals and supporting arguments:

Paragraph 2: Mobile phones can be a serious distraction in classrooms.

ringing and vibration prevent teachers and students from concentrating (phones ringing or vibrating);

students secretly play games or check social media (students secretly play games or check social media);

the risk of theft or threats of violence due to a valuable smartphone (the phone may be stolen or taken with threats of violence).

Paragraph 3: Some people say that mobile phones are an essential part of a modern person's life, and it is unfair to take them away.

Phones are an important part of modern life;

parents want to be able to contact their child in an emergency (parents may wish to be able to get in touch with their child in an emergency).

Paragraph 4: The school environment is not meant to be the same as the rest of a person's life, but a place of concentration and safety.

school should be a place of concentration and safety, not ordinary life (a place of concentration and safety);

In an emergency, parents can call the school (parents can telephone the school itself).

Paragraph 5: Mobiles in schools can be beneficial to a certain extent, but they are an unnecessary distraction in class and a potential cause of crime.

Argument / example: Phones should be used only before and after school (should be used only before and after school).

звонки и вибрации мешают учителям и ученикам сосредоточиться (phones ringing or vibrating);

ученики тайно играют в игры или проверяют соцсети (students secretly play games or check social media);

риск кражи или угроз насилия из‑за ценного смартфона (the phone may be stolen or taken with threats of violence).

телефоны — важная часть современной жизни;

родители хотят иметь возможность связаться с ребёнком в экстренной ситуации (parents may wish to be able to get in touch with their child in an emergency).

школа должна быть местом концентрации и безопасности, а не обычной жизнью (a place of concentration and safety);

в экстренной ситуации родители могут позвонить в школу (parents can telephone the school itself).

Аргумент / пример: телефоны следует использовать только до и после уроков (should be used only before and after school).

Read extracts 1–4 at the top of p. 149. Which are beginnings and which are endings? Which of the techniques (A–C) below have been used in each?

A Addressing the reader directly

B Asking a rhetorical question

C Using direct speech / a quotation

All things considered, it seems to me that we place too much emphasis on technological achievement in our educational systems. Wouldn't it be awful if more traditional lessons were totally removed from the curriculum?

You get on the bus just wanting to enjoy a relaxing journey before your busy day, but all you can hear around you are silly ringtones and loud conversations on mobile phones. Does this sound familiar? To my mind, the best solution to this would be to totally ban the use of mobile phones on public transport.

To sum up, while I agree that technology is taking over our lives to a certain extent, in my opinion humans will never be replaced by machines completely. As Elbert Hubbard once said, "One machine can do the work of fifty ordinary men. No machine can do the work of one extraordinary man."

George Orwell once said, "Men are only as good as their technical development allows them to be." It seems to me that this supports the argument that a good knowledge of technology is now essential for success in the world of work.
