Was an English novelist, journalist, sociologist and historian, who is best known for his science-fiction novels such as The Island of Doctor Moreau (1896), The Invisible Man (1897) and The War of the Worlds (1898).

The Time Machine (1895) which was his first novel, was so popular that it has been made into two successful films. The novel is about a young scientist, Alexander Hartdegen, who invents a time machine and devotes his life to travelling through time. Wells’ attention to detail makes his work seem believable even today.

The book (and the work of H. G. Wells in general) refers to fiction, or rather to the genre of science fiction (science fiction).

The titles of the works (The Time Machine, The Invisible Man) suggest a fantastic, unrealistic plot.

The biography explicitly calls Wells a novelist and notes that he became famous for his science fiction novels.

The summary of The Time Machine (the story of a scientist who invents a time machine) confirms that this is a work of fiction with a fantastic premise.

What is the passage about: the passage describes the first test of the Time Machine. The narrator shares his impressions of the journey through time: how the perception of the world around him changes, how the change of day and night accelerates, what sensations he experiences. There are many vivid images in the text — for example, that Mrs. Watchett "swept around the room like a rocket," and the night came "as if the lamp had been turned off."

Who says: The narrator is the inventor of the Time Machine. He addresses the audience (possibly colleagues or friends), to whom he has previously talked about the principles of the device ("I told some of you last Thursday about the principles of the Time Machine"). Judging by the details and tone of the story, this is a scientist or engineer who personally created and tested the car.

Problems with the Time Machine and their solution (according to the first paragraph):

Damage after travel: the car is slightly battered ("a little travel-worn"), one of the ivory bars is cracked ("one of the ivory bars is cracked"), the brass rail bent ("a brass rail bent").

Build error: On Friday, when the build was almost complete, it turned out that one of the nickel bars was exactly one inch too short. Because of this, the completion of the work had to be postponed.

The cracked rod and bent rail, apparently, either did not begin to be repaired (they are mentioned as a fact), or partially repaired — the narrator notes that "the rest of it is sound enough."

The too short nickel rod had to be redone ("this I had to get remade"), which is why the machine was ready only in the morning of the day when the story takes place ("so that it was not complete until this morning").

Before launching, he conducted a final check: he gave the car the last light push ("gave it a last tap"), rechecked all the screws ("tried all the screws again"), added a drop of oil to the quartz rod ("put one more drop of oil on the quartz rod") and sat down in the saddle ("sat myself in the saddle").

'I told some of you last Thursday about the principles of the Time Machine, and showed you the actual thing itself, incomplete in the workshop.

I expected to finish it on Friday, but on Friday, when the putting together was nearly done, I found that one of the nickel bars was exactly one inch too short, and this I had to get remade, A ...... It was at ten o’clock today that the first Time Machine ever began its career. I gave it a last tap, tried all the screws again, put one more drop of oil on the quartz rod, and sat myself in the saddle. I took the starting lever in one hand and the stopping one in the other, pressed the first, and almost immediately the second. I felt unsteady, then a nightmare sensation of falling but, looking round, I saw the laboratory exactly as before. Had anything happened? For a moment I suspected that my intellect had tricked me. Then I noted the clock. A moment before, as it seemed, it had been a minute or so past ten; now it was nearly half past three!

I drew a breath, set my teeth, gripped the starting lever with both hands, B .... The laboratory went hazy and then dark. Mrs Watchett came in and walked, apparently without seeing me, towards the garden door. I suppose it took her a minute or so to cross the place, C ..... I pushed the lever to full power. The night came like the turning out of a lamp, and in another moment came tomorrow. The laboratory grew faint and hazy, then fainter and ever fainter. Tomorrow night came black, then day again, night again, day again, still faster and faster. A whirling murmur filled my ears, and a strange confusedness descended on my mind.

I am afraid I cannot convey the peculiar sensations of time travelling. They are excessively unpleasant. There is a feeling exactly like that one has upon a switchback of a helpless headlong motion! I felt the same horrible anticipation, too, of an imminent smash. As I increased speed, night followed day like the flapping of a black wing. The dim outline of the laboratory seemed presently to fall away from me, D ....., leaping it every minute, and every minute marking a day. I supposed the laboratory had been destroyed and I had come into the open air. I had a dim impression of scaffolding, E ...... The slowest snail that ever crawled dashed by too fast for me. The twinkling succession of darkness and light was excessively painful to the eye. Then, in the darkness, I saw the moon spinning swiftly through her quarters from new to full, and had a faint glimpse of the circling stars. As I went on, still gaining speed, the appearance of night and day merged into one continuous greyness; the sky took on a wonderful deepness of blue, F .....; the sun became a streak of fire, a brilliant arch, in space; the moon a fainter changing band, and I could see nothing of the stars except a brighter circle flickering in the blue now and then.'
